We didn't start the fire

Firefighters are in. In fact, firefighters never went out of style since 9/11. Their heroics make for epic tales that make American hearts puff up with pride.

Playing a fireman may also key up John Travolta, since he has not had a memorable hit since the fires started. Even as he puts them out, he will fan his hopes, for co-star Joaquin Phoenix arrives fresh and smelling of success from M Night Shyamalan’s The Village.

Ladder 49, Jay Russell’s (My Dog Skip) new film about Baltimore firemen, has been flayed in critics’ previews as woefully lacking in drama, even though it is full of realistic visual effects.

Won’t set the box office on fire, but likely to make many moviegoers cry. You know what they say... smoke gets in your eyes.

Ladder 49 is one of several Hollywood releases premiering in October. rediff.com previews some of them.
