Mira Nair couldn't bring home the Golden Lion, like she did three years ago with Monsoon Wedding. Her Vanity Fair did not win in any category at the Venice Film Festival.

The highest award at Venice -- the Golden Lion -- was awarded to British director Mike Leigh for his Vera Drake.

CNN reported that while receiving the award, Leigh quipped: 'I would like to thank most sincerely the Cannes film festival for rejecting this film so I could come to Venice.'

Spanish film Mar Adentro -- directed by Chile-born Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar (The Others) -- won the Silver Lion.
