A pinch of Grinch
It was a role Jim Carrey executed to perfection, bringing to life Dr Seuss’ fantastic world in Ron Howard’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2001).
Costume designer Rita Ryack, who won an Oscar for her work, dreamed up a 1950s look for the film, for which she picked up ideas from pictures in old cookbooks. The Grinch suit worn by Carrey is covered in yak hairs, which were dyed green and sewn one by one onto a spandex suit.
In 2003 Ryack, seen here with one of her creations for The Grinch, worked on another Dr Seuss adaptation, The Cat In The Hat starring Mike Myers as The Cat. She has also designed costumes for Wag The Dog (1997), Rush Hour 2 (2001), A Beautiful Mind (2001) and The Human Stain (2003).
