December is when Hollywood invariably goes into overdrive. Directors and major studios frantically release films -- to give them enough time to generate Oscar buzz and promote them ad nauseam. And, of course, to cash in on the holiday season.

Here's a preview of movies coming up in December 2004:

Closer

Cast: Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen
Director: Mike Nichols
Written by: Patrick Marber

Director Mike Nichols' eagerly anticipated film seems armed for surefire acclaim. Nichols (The weaver of the still-enchanting The Graduate) is fresh from conquering new ground with Angels in America on HBO, which racked up a stellar 21 Emmy nominations.

Based on the Marber play of the same name, Closer is a tale of tormented love. Jude Law, the most seen actor of the season, stars as a writer who betrays girlfriend Natalie Portman for Julia Roberts, who becomes Clive Owen's lover. The film is supposedly about very dark, frighteningly loathsome people, nevertheless real, and relatable.

Nichols has hinted that the film is laced with humour, and he's one of the few directors whose tall claims aren't as tall.

So what can we look forward to? A nasty, bitter, painful film that makes you laugh.

Wow.
