Fardeen Khan

This picture was designed for the publicity of a film. Fardeen has been always portrayed as a glamorous chocolate boy; he has a very gora chitta image.

The film had an outdoor shooting schedule in New Zealand. We were on a hilly area and the sunlight was too strong. It was irritating Fardeen. So I told the makeup man to spray water on his face. The guy was very scared and he said, 'baba bhadak jayega.'

But I forced him to do it. Fardeen squinted when water was sprayed on him, and before he realised what had happened, I got the shot with a strong sunlight and watermarks on his face.

This picture has a very sharp profile and an Italian look, with a strong jaw to go with it. It shows his personality on a different scale, rather than a good-looking chocolate boy. I wanted an intense picture.

He liked this shot so much, he asked me not to give it to the producer, but to a magazine.

Fardeen is a very easygoing guy. He is the photographer's baby. You just have to explain the shot to him and he will do it even if he doesn't understand. He also likes to experiment. I have done quite a few assignments with him.

I don't like to shoot on sets. I want the person to be centrestage, and don't want eyes to stray to the surroundings.
