Jackie Shroff

Jackie is my buddy. I met him long before his film, Hero. I noticed him in an ad. He was modeling for Bru (coffee), where he runs at Mahalaxmi racecourse with some horses. I saw him with long hair and a bandana. He looked so stylish.

I got the number from an agency and approached him. He was very keen to do a shoot. I was trying to locate his house when he called out from one of the chawl's balconies.

When I went up, he was standing in a queue for the loo. That's how we met the first time.

(Jackie's wife) Ayesha (Dutt) made a cup of tea for my sister and me. They were not married at that time. It was just a room without a kitchen.

I adore his style, the way he walks with his drooping shoulders. In those days, he was the ultimate photographer's delight. After that, he got films like Hero, Kaash, Parinda and Ram Lakhan and became a star.

But he would still call me at odd hours and say, 'Jayesh, get ready. Tomorrow, we are leaving for Matheran.'

Matheran was the best place where I could find suitable lighting for his face. We would go there often.

This picture looks like it has been shot indoors, but it actually an outdoor shot in Matheran. That's the picture from where the filmmakers got Jackie's look in Mission Kashmir.

This shot was not planned. We were relaxing after lunch, and he was sitting under a tree. A patch of light was falling on him and he was looking down. I called out to him and he looked at me this way. You could not see his eyeballs, just the whites in his eyes.

This is Jackie's favourite picture ever. I've got amazing pictures of Jackie Shroff. I can easily have an exhibition of his pictures!
