Urmila Matondkar had a spunky Western look in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. Rani Mukerji looked cute in Mujhse Dosti Karoge. And Kareena Kapoor set new standards with her Poo look in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Heroines look swell in Western outfits. But there is something to be said about an Indian heroine in a sari.

Take Aishwarya Rai in Devdas. Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani. Madhuri Dixit in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. And so many more.

Saris are, indeed, a fashion statement, and a testament to grace and femininity. Long blouses, short blouses, blouses with puffed sleeves, chiffons, georgettes, cottons, silks -- the sari has come a long way.

This is rediff.com's ode to some of the modern-day versions of the sari.
