Husainsaab leaves you in your own space. He never interferes. He gives you the liberty to interpret the scene in your own way. There is a lot of encouragement from him and everyone on the sets. They gave me time to do it.
If I got stuck, he would tell me why he wrote the scene and what he thought about the scene. There was a scene where the lines were very difficult. Their meaning was very deep.
Husain is not an abstract person. He just talks from somewhere deep. When he says something, you may

| not relate to it instantly. He is three times my age and has more experience than me. There have been times when I would disagree with him in my mind. But a month later, I would understand what he had said.
There was never any yelling on the sets. If he did not like something, he would encourage and push you further. I have never seen him upset or angry. Even if he was, it would last only two minutes. He is a very happy man. A really bad day for him would be when he was less happy. I could feel it at times but I was too busy trying to do my job. He has the ability to look at things from a different perspective. He is very open. He never discourages anyone. He is never judgemental. There is never a right or wrong. Life is very precious to him. There is so much he wants to do. Husain's films are not abstract either. He is a student of cinema. He has been watching all kinds of cinema for the last 50 years. Just because he spoke a certain language in Gaja Gamini does not mean it will be the same in Meenaxi. The two films are very different. Meenaxi is like a beautiful poem. His third film [with Urmila Matondkar] will again have a new language. I have seen a lot of talented people like Santosh Sivan, Naseeruddin Shah, Tabu, Manoj Bajpai, Raghuvir Yadav and Husainsaab. They have different styles of working but they have one thing in common: depth. They are also very open to experiences in life.
