2004 has been a year with few successes -- a lot of which were unexpected.

Hindi cinema is going through an exciting stage of flux, provided by an unpredictable audience. No one knows what will succeed, except, as Neha Dhupia succinctly summed up, 'Only sex sells and Shah Rukh Khan.'

2004 vindicated her with great relish. Here's a journey of the year's biggest successes, discussed by trade pundit Indu Mirani.

11. Girlfriend

A film that banked successfully on the controversy it generated. In fact, Girlfriend actually opened rather poorly. But after kicking up the lesbianism controversy across the country, the movie started doing better in its second and third weeks!
