There are times I am dying to see a film end because it is terrible. And there are other times when I want the film to be over quickly because I want to see it all over again! When I get that feeling, I know I am watching an exceptional film.

Not all the 10 films I have listed here gave me that feeling but many left images, pieces of dialogue, and plot twists in my mind long after they were over.

There is no scientific reason for the list below. If you ask me to draw the list again after some days, there would be some new films on it. Even if the list is unchanged, its order may differ.

When I see over 200 films a year -- about one sixth of them at the Toronto International Film Festival -- it is very easy to get bored. But the following films kept me utterly awake. The list is confined to the films released in North America.

Once again, an amazing filmmaker shows that one doesn't need a mega budget, computer graphics and marquee names to make a brilliant film. Clint Eastwood, at 74, has more energy, imagination and humility than most filmmakers half his age.

His newest film uses the backdrop of boxing to unravel the souls of its main characters. Everything is sparse and measured even the melodramatic turn towards the end.
