For every great film, there are several disasters. Awful, unforgivable productions of painful cinema seemingly derived only to inflict torture onto a captive audience -- from a complete disregard for plot to the most cliched of dialogues, to hammed, overblown acting.

The sad fact is that it was hard shortlisting a list of really bad films for 2004 for rediff.com readers worldwide to vote on.

Not as if there weren't enough. Hah. We wish. The difficulty was in restricting them to what suddenly seemed such an inadequate list.

The results are out, and here are the worst films of 2004, chosen by rediff.com readers worldwide.

5. Naach

This one was too abstruse to be understood -- perhaps even by director Ram Gopal Varma himself. Inspired close-ups and camera unconventionality is all very well, said audiences annoyed with a bizarre set of choreographed dances, but the film is impossible to relate to! Most critics compared Antara Mali's multiple contortions to Jim Carrey, and the film was a box-office bomb.
