Noted cinematographer Ravi K Chandran recently finished shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji.

Though the shooting got over in August, Chandran has not worked in any other film as he - note the irony - wanted to be available for any possible colour-correction in Black. He considers the film to be among the most important work in his career, and one of his favourites.

When I met him, he'd just returned to Chennai and was preparing to shoot his next project, directed by Amol Palekar, and produced and starring Shah Rukh Khan. The yet-untitled film will also star Rani Mukerji. In this interview, he talks about Black and the new project:

"It was on the fourth or fifth day of the Dil Chahta Hai shooting that Sanjay Leela Bhansali first met me. It was to discuss his film Devdas (starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai).

He had seen Kandukondein Kandukondein and had liked it. Anil Mehta, the cameraman, had also recommended my name. At the time, Anil was busy with Lagaan.

But I had given dates to Farhan Akthar. I couldn't adjust 15 days for Devdas, having already committed to Dil Chahta Hai. Sanjay could not wait due to Aishwarya Rai's dates. We had to part, promising that we would do the next film together."
