Shetty rewinds to his childhood. "I was eight years old when I learnt martial arts. That is why I have a great body."
"When I came into the industry, people said, 'Great body, villain hona chahiye' [he should become a villain]. Now, thanks to the awareness, they say the hero should also be well built," he says.
Shetty made his debut as an action hero with Balwaan (1992).

"I am happy I am the one of the first to make fitness an issue. It introduces discipline into your life. Come on, how many roles can you play if you are five feet tall? Action heroes go on forever. Look at Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. Amitabh is 6' 3''. What a towering personality! He's larger than life. That helps. He played the angry young man so well. It was his height that helped, among other things. If you have a good physique, you can do a variety of roles."
