Owns: Royal Enfield Lightening 535.
Will he buy the Nano? No
He has a beauty on two wheels that eerily matches the Nano spec-for-spec. His motorcycle is powered by a 535 cc engine that returns 27 kmph. The Nano has a 623 cc engine that returns 23 kmph.
The Lightening also cost around Rs 1 lakh when it was in production. But that is where the similarity ends.
There will hardly be about a thousand of these exclusive bikes in the country, whereas 100,000 Nanos is what Tata Motors will sell in its first batch.
"And definitely, maintaining a Nano is going to cost a lot less than what costs me to keep this bike running," he grins.
I won't buy it for personal reasons. Even if I buy a car now, I will probably buy an Amby (Ambassador) for its charms. That apart, the Nano is going to spoil a city like Delhi, where a lot of people already own two cars.
For them to pay a lakh and get the third car is not going to be an issue.
Soon, you will see school kids zipping around the city's market places. A third car for the upper middle class in Delhi and that too for Rs 1 lakh is no big deal.
From a second car for shopping, it will now become a third car for the servant.
Here are a few things that the Nano is going to do:
The traffic scene is going to become pretty bad in the cities.
There are going to be a lot of untrained and inexperienced drivers at the wheels of a car weaving through the heavy traffic.
It is going to have a tremendous impact on the traffic infrastructure.
