Nooyi on her toughest decision & her Pepsi family

April 16, 2009

She said that in India mothers play very important roles in the career decisions of their children even after they have grown up and are working in senior positions.

Once when she went to India to visit her mother, she recalled, she saw how scores of neighbours would come day in and day out to meet her mother to ask her as to what was the secret of raising children like her daughter (Indra).

When Nooyi came back to the United States, she took a leaf from what she saw at her mother's home in India and wrote personal letters to the parents of the members of her executive council, telling them how important their children were in the life of the company and how thankful she was to the parents for the wonderful jobs these people were doing.

"I was expecting some small 'thank you' notes from them but the outpouring of emotion and response I got was incredible," she said. She said she also writes personal letters to the spouses of all the 27 members of her executive council appreciating for what their spouses do for PepsiCo. "So making the extended PepsiCo family has really worked well," she said.
