Poor women turn tourism entrepreneurs in Kerala

September 24, 2008

In Kumarakom, at least 15 hoteliers have signed an agreement with about 1,200 women to procure locally available raw materials, including vegetables, poultry, egg and meat from them.

Women have formed self-help groups to start paddy, vegetable and animal husbandry enterprises too, she said.

Thirty two women have been trained in dairy farming.

In Kovalam as in Kumarakom, special emphasis is given to setting up micro enterprises under Kudumbashree, whereby women's groups supply vegetables, milk and meat to nearby hotels.
