Poor women turn tourism entrepreneurs in Kerala

September 24, 2008

Call it women power! Underprivileged women in Kerala are turning entrepreneurs these days, supplying a wide range of products to hotels and resorts.

The project, which comes under the purview of Responsible Tourism initiative of Kerala government, has taken off at the picturesque Kumarakom Island -- which houses several reputed hotel chains.

It has been initiated at Kovalam too, Tourism Director V Venu said.

The project is also expected to travel to Thekkady and Wayanad later this year.

The new initiative seeks to build productive links between tourism business and local community, Venu said.
