Indian aviation crashing: Hundreds to lose jobs

October 15, 2008

India's aviation industry is in the doldrums.

And even as Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel inaugurated 'India Aviation 2008,' the four-day, first of its kind exhibition on the civil aviation sector in India, at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad on Wednesday, the order of the day in the industry seems to be jobs cuts, cost cuts, cry for bailout packages, consolidation, etc.

The exhibition has been organised by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry from October 15-18, 2008. But it couldn't have come at a worse time for the sector.

The bosses of all top airlines are meeting in Hyderabad to discuss the challenges that the industry is facing: dropping passenger demand, high cost of aviation fuel, high taxes, rate-cuts by the competition making airfares uneconomical, etc.
