Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
Today, less than twenty years later, their combined United States market share has dipped below 50 per cent, while Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda have doubled their presence in America during the same period.
This starling reversal of fortunes is symptomatic of a larger problem: from mismanagement at the top, to inflexible union demands at the bottom; from poorly allocated research and development funds to miscalculations about future market and consumer trends, all is not well in Detroit.
