Echoing the words of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, yesterday Indian President Pratibha Patil issued humanity -- particularly the business world -- a challenge to ensure peace and sustainability and to prevent further environmental degradation through innovative technology and increased global cooperation. Issuing a warning to those who hope to insulate themselves from global problems in the 21st century, she said, "We are in a critical time in history. We cannot move recklessly into the future. It is time to pause and think, as some critical choices are required to be made."
Speaking from the historic convocation hall at University of Mumbai, her remarks came as part of the inauguration speech she delivered to the Responsibility to the Future convention, which has brought roughly 300 Indian and international delegates to Mumbai this week for discussions on, among other things, corporate social responsibility and responsible business.
One of the core components of her speech saw President Patil urge developed nations to facilitate the transfer of new technologies to developing countries; as such efforts would benefit humanity as a whole. To do this, she proposed the easing of rigid intellectual property rights (IPRs) that keep environmentally friendly technologies heavily concentrated in North America and Western Europe.
The honourable President concluded with a quote from an ancient Sanskit scripture, which, when translated, means: "Trees do not eat their own fruits; they are for others. The rivers do not drink their own water; it is for others. Cows give milk for others to drink. So, then, should enlightened peoples use their lives for others."
