'Indian animators are second to none'

July 28, 2008

How do you assess Indian animators? What do they lack? And what is their strength?

Indian animators are second to none in terms of skill sets. India has emerged as a prime destination for animation outsourcing because of this skilful workforce, who can handle English well and understand western humour, both of which are an integral part of animation.

The main drawback they have is their lack of experience in pre-production/creation of IPs. This scenario shall change when Indian studio majors emphasise on creating domestic animation contents in a big way.

What kind of curriculum do you follow? In what do you train the students?

Toonz Academy follows a curriculum designed by an international panel of experts including Barry Parker who was a faculty member at the famous Sheridan College, Canada.

The curriculum is framed by balancing the pre-production aspect as well as the production aspect in animation. The course aims to impart proficiency in key areas like character-modelling, background, organic character texturing, lighting, character rigging, character animation and particle effects, dynamics, and compositing. All these in house training are supplemented by seminars and workshops by leading experts in the industry.

The emphasis is on 'experiencing and learning.' The class hours are translated to live work in our studios during the time of placement. We also organise unique learning experiences like animation acting classes, clay-modelling classes, zoo study, etc.
