A 'clothes bank' that helps millions

August 8, 2008

In January 2007, Anshu and his team visited a village called Gidhdha, about 30 kilometers from Patna. The visit was an eye-opener to Gupta who went packed with woolen clothes. In the village, children did not have a single piece of cloth to cover themselves.

It was shocking to find that in winter, parents made their naked children sleep in a small hole dug in the ground and cover them with grass, to survive the chilly nights. People also took loans on high interest to buy clothes, which didn't even last long, Gupta found.

"Countless people suffer across the world due to lack of warm clothing. Even in some parts of India, women face indignity as they don't have clothes to wear while others cannot even take bath as they nothing to change into,' Gupta said. Why is clothing not an issue, a subject to work on?, Gupta asked while regretting that the websites of the most prestigious development organisations, funding agencies, corporates listed a range of issues right from domestic violence to global warning but there was no mention of clothing.
