Cubans allowed to own cellphones

April 15, 2008

However, despite the ban being lifted and hundreds of people buying phones, most Cubans cannot afford one. Reports say that the average Cuban’s monthly salary is about 400 Cuban pesos ($18), while the mobile phone service could cost about 3,500 pesos.

Telecom Italia is assisting the state-run ETECSA to expand the existing systems to handle the spurt in capacity.
