How it all began

They were working with Sildenafil, the active drug in Viagra, as a cardiovascular medicine and for capacity to lower blood pressure. Sildenafil was synthesized by a group of working at Pfizer's research unit at Sandwich in Kent (United Kingdom)
Between 1986 and 1990, hundreds of drug molecules were tested in the laboratory. But the most promising molecule turned out to be UK-92,480. From the results, it seemed that this molecule was best suited to treat heart disorder.
The medicine was later called Sildenafil and finally renamed Viagra (Sildenafil citrate).
