How IIT wizards created a male contraceptive

April 01, 2008
Guha received his PhD in medical physiology from St Louis, USA. He founded the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, IIT Delhi and AIIMS and also obtained an MBBS degree from Delhi University.

Generously referred to as an 'overtly humble genius,' this publicity-averse inventor of RISUG has only two bananas for lunch, C V Raman style, while arranging an elaborate spread for this correspondent.

Obstacles that crossed his path

A veteran scientist that he is, Guha knows how to fight obstacles to a new invention. Therefore, even death threats could not deter him to go ahead with his work on RISUG.

"Any scientific invention, however great, initially faces RAMA (rejection, anger, mellowing, and acceptance) as (former Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Telecom Commission chairman) N Vittal had told me. RISUG was no exception. It met with many obstacles on its way," Guha told rediff.com.

"Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, whom I had met on September 11, 2002, had guided me how to rise above impediments. His tips were invaluable," he added.
