Of Narayana Murthy and controversy

April 13, 2007

The Cauvery issue

Although, Narayana Murthy has time and again denied any interest in getting into the world of politics, his name has made the rounds whenever there is talk of a Presidential candidate. However, despite his view on not joining politics, Murthy has been a critic of governmental policies on the acquisition of agricultural land for special economic zones, reservations in higher educational institutions, etc.

No sooner did the national anthem controversy hit the headlines than Murthy found himself facing yet another protest. This time, the furore was over his remarks on the Cauvery water issue.

Stating that bandhs to protest against the Cauvery Tribunal's verdict on sharing water with Tamil Nadu would not help Karnataka's cause, Murthy said that the Karnataka government should instead use facts to argue its case in the courts.

This statement sparked off protests across Karnataka, with hundreds of farmers picketing the Infosys campus in Mysore. Infosys, offices, nonetheless had remained closed on account of the bandh call.
