Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday said that the Central Board of Direct Taxes had regretted his lawyer wife Nalini being assigned an Income Tax department case and he would have 'nipped it in the bud' if the proposal had been brought to his notice earlier.

"I had no knowledge on the matter and at any point of time had the matter been brought to my notice, I would have ensured that the proposal of (to engage) Nalini Chidambaram was nipped in the bud and not proceeded any further," Chidambaram told the Rajya Sabha giving personal explanation on the issue which rocked the House.
