When the US catches a cold, we all sneeze! The economic recession in the West has led to a slowdown here in India. Given the current situation of lay-offs, smaller pay packages and non-existent appraisals and promotions, where does one go looking for a job? analyses some employment trends this year, and brings to you the hottest and coldest options of 2009.

IT and IT-related services

This sector was the key job creator in 2007 and 2008. A lot of young professionals are apprehensive about the quarterly results of IT companies.

However, international education counsellor Karan Gupta predicts that IT will still be a good sector to look for jobs. "The need for computer security, wireless security and information security will increase this year. BPOs are expected to see a small growth, because in times of cost cutting, BPOs emerge as the best way to cut corners," he says.

The forecast for 2009 is that the IT sector should be able to keep its head above the water during the slowdown. Companies are expected to stick to targets and perhaps even increase the number of people hired. Because the economy of Western countries is in a slump right now, more outsourcing is expected, which means more work for Indians in India.

Also, experts say that the other emerging low-cost options like China and the Philippines are still six or seven years behind India in this department. So while we shouldn't expect a dramatic increase in the number of employees hired, most IT people with decent communication skills should be able to find work. For instance, Infosys is hiring right now.

Salary structure:
If you want to join the IT sector and have a post-graduate diploma along with three to five years of experience, you can join as an accounst manager and command a salary of Rs 25,000 to Rs 55,000. A graduate with four to seven years of experience can join as a business/systems analyst, drawing a salary of Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000 per month. A software engineer with three to five years of work experience behind him can expect to draw between Rs 30,000 and Rs 65,000. The BPO industry pays freshers about Rs 20,000 per month, while a trainer who has had a couple of years' experience draws between Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000.
