Wedding special: Where's the honeymoon?

January 15, 2009
You have had your big day, so now it's time to get away. The honeymoon can be even more fun than getting married. It's the most stress-free time you're going to share, before things like family, careers, kids and other responsibilities kick in.

Whether it's a three-day, uber-exclusive getaway or a month of backpacking, you need to spend some time planning your honeymoon. Of course, a word of warning -- any travel plans are subject to external factors. So be flexible and know that even if things don't go exactly the way you planned them, you'll still have fun together and strengthen your relationship.

No one knows the exact origins of this sweet-sounding word, but it is said that the idea of couples taking a holiday together after their wedding first became popular in the late 1800s. One speculation is that new love's ardour wanes even as it waxes to the fullest, just like the moon and hence the month after the wedding is the month when love's in full bloom and 'as sweet as honey'.

Another possible origin of the word is from the Babylonian practice wherein the groom was supposed to be given as much 'mead' as he wanted (for happiness and fertility) by the bride's family for an entire month after the wedding. As mead is made from honey, it made sense to call this month a 'honeymoon'.
