The tunic dress
The tunic dress will continue to reign through 2009. Predicts designer Ruchi Mehta, who runs fashion house salt, "It's been around for two years now, but the tunic dress will remain popular this year too; you can wear it by itself, over leggings, tights or trousers and also over churidaar pants for an ethnic feel."
Designer Nachiket Barve agrees. "For the last two or three years, dresses have been immensely popular, especially with Indian women. The tunic dress in particular is a comfy garment and very versatile, so it will be a summer favourite," he says. "What will be popular later in the year, though, is anybody's guess. While the international fashion circuit has defined trends, our Indian market is a little quirky. There are so many people at so many levels in life and society, plus the influence of the financial climate and Bollywood movies -- you never know what will be popular by the time Diwali rolls around! Here, we can only predict a beginning in the shifting of trends, because regardless of what you consider 'in' or 'out', people are dressed in all kinds of clothes through the year -- for instance, you'll see people wearing all kinds of jeans, from skinny fits to bellbottoms at any given point in time!"
