Getting it 'rite'

January 2, 2009
Some bridges simply love the rituals, while some others consider them a rite of passage that just has to be dealt with. Here are some tips on how to enjoy the ceremony.

First things first, have a clear idea of exactly what's going to happen throughout so that you don't land up fumbling, giggling or yawning through the ceremony. We may not follow the Western rehearsal dinner tradition in India, but getting a step-by-step run through of the rites will help you and your husband follow them better.

  • Pay attention to what the priest is saying. It won't do to miss a step while daydreaming about your future! Also, it's special when you understand the significance of the ceremony.

  • Make sure you've drunk water or visited the restroom before the rites. Check with a close family elder what to do if you just have to answer nature's call midway.

  • Have a friend on standby to fetch and carry essentials and to leave your emergency kit with. You never know that may crop up.

  • Remember that everyone's there to celebrate YOUR special day. This 'big picture' perspective will get you through the trauma of sitting still through it all and then smiling non-stop through greeting and meeting a slew of relatives whose names you can't recall.
