The battle of the snakeboats

The district of Alappuzha, in Kerala, got rather dressed up for a mighty special occasion last month.

Arches, hoardings, festoons welcomed thousands of visitors who poured into the banks of the Punamada Lake for the unforgettable Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2008.

Cheering locals bumped shoulders with excited tourists, who had occupied every inch of the shoreline; not counting the handful of tipsy revellers swimming around in the choppy waters.
