Dating ideas that don't cost the earth

November 26, 2008
So it's only a matter of time before the recession -- forgive me, 'economic downturn' -- hits us right where it hurts. In the wallet. A few of us would rather take a bullet right through the heart. Some rich little daddy's girl is probably throwing a hissy fit outside a Jimmy Choo showroom as we speak, because she's been told to hold off on a pair of limited edition crocodile pumps. And Jimmy Choo himself is probably wailing like a little girl -- how could anybody refuse to shell out $1500 for a pair of his simply darling handmade shoes?

Anyhoo, let's get back to the troubles us common folk are facing. Like maybe where to take the girlfriend Saturday night, considering all that's in our pockets is lint -- and that's if she hasn't already left you for some moneybags bad boy who wines, dines and treats her like a princess.

No, we see you shaking your head. We know you can't compete with him. But if she really sees something in you and isn't quite the spoiled brat we're making her out to be, she just may go for our special dating ideas.

Read on to woo your ladylove in styles that won't cost you a mile!

Idea Number One: Ye olde fashioned picnic

Before you start clucking in disdain, hear us out. This dating idea may sound corny, but it will work like a charm.

Head to a city park or the beach with an old-fashioned picnic lunch -- homemade fried chicken, salad, some interesting Italian bread rolls, wine and maybe ice-cream. You can also carry along a little portable radio or an interesting board game like Chess or Scrabble to while away the time. You may feel a little silly about the whole thing at first, but your girlfriend will love it. Lots of brownie points to be scored here.
