'The days of dream jobs and day zero salary packages are over'

November 25, 2008
Meet six young management graduates from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, NMIMS, who will be facing the placement season with lots of hopes and a bit of nervousness. They discussed with rediff.com how they are coping with the daily dose of bad news coming in from across the world, how they will face the placement season at their college this December and next January and why they are not too worried about the fallout of an economic slowdown.

However, they all know that the job market is pretty tight and the days of dream jobs and zero day hefty salary packages are over.

The lateral placements (only for those students having at least two years of experience) begin from December 3 to December 16 and the executive placements (for those having less than two years of experience) will begin from January 21, 2009 to January 27, 2009.

  • Name: Vikhyaat Bansal from Haryana. Cleared Narsee Monjee Aptitude Test, NMAT, in June 2006.
  • Age: 26 years
  • Specialisation: Marketing

Vikhyaat on lateral placements: The laterals this year will be focused towards knowing what your profile is rather than going for your dream job. You should be practical enough to understand what the situation today is.

His motto: Survive today so that you can fight tomorrow.

Preferred sector: Since I am from the sales background I’d rather choose a marketing company.

About the economic downturn: Not scared I'd say. It is giving me the jitters, though.

Plans to face the slowdown: I'd not think of a great package today. Rather I'd go for a good job profile even if I am paid less for that.

Loan repayment: I have taken a student loan of Rs 5 lakh. Any MBA student like me would have taken a study loan. I have a financial responsibility to repay my loan within six months of getting a job and I will fulfill it.

Vikhyaat's tips to cope with the current slowdown:

  • The days of dream jobs and day zero salary packages are over
  • Be practical and honest and do what you want to
  • Find a job for yourself; mark yourself against your peers. Know where you stand and then take a decision
  • Finally, keep your fingers crossed

I'd be more selective. I don't expect too many companies to come for laterals this year. We all know that the job market is down.
