Trailing the tiger in Mowgli land

Text and photographs: Sunil Mukhopadhyay and Rimjhim Mukhopadhyay

'Welcome to Mowgli Land', greeted the signboard as we reached Khawasa, the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. We followed the road on the left that goes straight to Pench National Park, our first stop in tigerland, Madhya Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism's Kipling Court hotel is located close to the park. It was noon when we reached. We were getting restless to go to the park but Vipin, the hotel manager, told us the park opens at 3.30 pm for its evening visiting hours.

Finally evening came and we set out for the park. We had to stop at the gate to complete entry formalities. There were other vehicles too, mostly foreign tourists. Our driver Ashok promptly took care of the formalities and then introduced us to our guide Anil.
