Now is the time to slowly incorporate meditation into your routine. In yoga, a regular practice of meditation helps to shore up will power and determination. It acts like the glue that makes you stick to your resolutions. This practise starts with the simple habit of sitting (or lying) still, which can be rather tough on most of us. In yoga, this simple resolution to keep the body still and steady is called kaya sthairam.

To sit still involves mental resolve. Sit still for five minutes to experience for yourself the physical unwillingness. This resistance is universal. It will erupt as some itch that screams for our attention (and any physical movement to relieve it). Even an intangible touch of a strand of hair can be disturbing and distracting!

You may experience numbness or pain or even sheer boredom -- all manifestations of a compelling unwillingness to sit still. This is when you have to decide to choose between the fickleness of your mind or the steadiness of your will power. The simple practice of kaya sthairam can truly test our will power.

If you can sit without itching to spring out of your steadiness, it is most likely that you will also stick to your resolution. The power and impact of meditation is tangential. But it never fails.
