June

Pick up an Internet yoga journal (there are million bonafide ones like www.yogajournal.com) and choose a sequence of poses that you will learn over the coming three months. Or buy a simple, inexpensive yoga book (for specific problems, like weight loss, controlling skins problems, developing abs, etc).

Most of them come with detailed how-tos that are very easy to follow. Practice one pose from such resources daily for a month.

Continue with any other exercise schedule as usual, but usher in yoga subtly. Focus on perfecting the poses before excitedly attempting too many. To understand if you have perfected the pose is rather simple, since there are several markers.

Ask yourself these questions: How deeply can you reach into the pose? Are you able to breathe without discomfort in the final pose? Are you able to hold the final pose without grimacing or suffering it?

Perfection in a pose is called asana jaya (victory over the pose). Once this state is achieved, yoga becomes a happy, enjoyable routine.

Remember that the pawanmuktasana series and the sun salutes are actually warm-ups. Your asana practise is defined by the classical poses you master.

In June, you can start off with learning leg raises, the inversion called viparita karani mudra and the fish or matsyasana pose.
