A thrilling parasail ride in Murud

It was a fairly cold December morning (in the year 2006) and I was waiting impatiently at the Gateway of India in Mumbai for Deepak to arrive. It was 6.30 am.

He finally arrived at around 7.15 am and we boarded the 7:30 jetty boat to Mandwa.

As the jetty moved away, the majestic Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Hotel, the Taj Intercontinental and the Mumbai skyline slowly disappeared from sight. We were on our way to welcome the New Year in Murud Janjira.

Murud Janjira in Raigad district of Maharashtra, is popular for its palm fringed beaches and a fort which is located in the middle of the sea.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

It was a 50-60 minute ride to Mandwa. Another 30 to 40 minute drive from Mandwa took us to Alibaug.

We reached Alibaug at 9.15 am and enquired about the state transport bus to Murud. We had a quick snack at a restaurant nearby before boarding the 9.30 am bus.

The two hour bus ride to Murud via Chondi -- Revdanda -- Kashid was picturesque although bumpy. Kihim beach is off Chondi, 3 km towards the west. Revdanda is another sea shore town. However, Kashid is the best of all.

We got off the bus at the cross road near the beach in Murud.

After a good look at the beach we went looking for a place to stay. We trudged the bylanes of Murud, checked quite a few hotels but didn't quite find anything suitable. Moreover there were no rooms available for the 31st night!

Finally, we met a Mr Mistry who owned a vehicle spare parts shop and had rooms available for rent.

At Rs 350 a night we got two rooms (one a 100 sq feet and the other 50 sq feet) with attached bath. We thought it was a good deal.

Mr Mistry, of course, claimed it could accommodate 8 to 10 people!
