'If we need money, we need money'

April 24, 2008
High inflation or not, pocket money they want and pocket money they get. However, they seem to have become smarter in the way they spend money in times when prices of essentials of daily use are going through the roof.

The 'they' here represents young, college-going students as well as those who are earning and have a family to support. For not only have these young people devised ways to cope with rising prices but have also found out unique ways to grapple with inflation.

"Unnecessary stuff doesn't need to be bought anymore," is what Sneha Bendre, a 20-year-old K C College student studying mass media, advises to all college students whose pockets are feeling the inflation pinch.

She believes that high prices or not money must be spent wherever required and not on luxuries, even as she happily chews a bubble gum.

Sneha's friend Preeti John, also 20, has like her finished her three-year BMM course from Bhawan’s College, Andheri, a Mumbai suburb and depends on her parents for pocket money.

Both, Preeti and Sneha, spend Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 that they get as pocket money every month on parties, gifts for friends' birthdays and other routine expenses.

They agree that it is not that difficult to manage their monthly expenses even when prices are rising fast. It's altogether a different matter that they are still not earning and depend on their parents for money. But then both these girls seem to have a good budgeting sense.

"You have to plan your expenses in a way so that they fit in your budget," Sneha retorts when asked if she ever overdraws her pocket money limit.

"Okay, when we know that there is this big thing coming up we avoid going out to parties where we tend to spend more," chips in Preeti in support of her friend.

Though inflation doesn't seem to have changed these girls’ lifestyle it certainly has led to tempers shooting up at home whenever there is demand for extra pocket money.

"Whenever we ask for extra pocket money tempers shoot up. I mean our parents face the direct brunt of inflation. We don't think twice before asking for pocket money from our parents. If we need money, we need money. But the easier and intelligent option is to plan well in advance. That way you save everybody's mood and we all live a peaceful life," signs off Sneha.
