A cause for concern

April 16, 2008
What's concerning, says Dr Shetty, is that depression amongst the young is growing too. "We now have cases among children as young as 7-8 years of age," he elaborates, "There are many reasons for their depression."

Here are some of the most common reasons:

  • Pressures due to the 'three-schools phenomenon' -- home, school and tuitions
  • Examination pressure
  • Not getting admission in the desired institute or course
  • Academic failure
  • Adjusting to life alone (hostel, boarding school)
  • Lack of contact with friends
  • Low vitamin B12
  • Anemia
  • Violence and abuse
  • Problems with relationships (home, school, society)
  • Alcoholism at home
  • Financial crisis in the family

These reasons can disturb the mental health of the teenager and one of the fall-outs could be depression.
