A cause for concern
April 16, 2008
What's concerning, says Dr Shetty, is that depression amongst the young is growing too. "We now have cases among children as young as 7-8 years of age," he elaborates, "There are many reasons for their depression."
Here are some of the most common reasons:
Pressures due to the 'three-schools phenomenon' -- home, school and tuitions
Examination pressure
Not getting admission in the desired institute or course
Academic failure
Adjusting to life alone (hostel, boarding school)
Lack of contact with friends
Low vitamin B12
Anemia
Violence and abuse
Problems with relationships (home, school, society)
Alcoholism at home
Financial crisis in the family
These reasons can disturb the mental health of the teenager and one of the fall-outs could be depression.
