Riding the toy train to Ooty

Every minute of the first hour or so after I hopped on to the Ooty mountain train from Mettuppalayam, I wanted jump off the train and run back.

The loud, monotonous strokes of the labouring steam engine were splitting my head and the large tinted windows on the painfully tiny coach were no match for the scorching summer sun. And since I had expected sweeping turns and dense greenery from the moment the engine whistled, the ramrod straight track ahead and the barren land on the sides pretty much nailed it. I wanted to go back.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

Within an hour or so, the train halted at a station named Kallar. A signboard reads: 'Nilgiri Mountain Railway welcomes you'

This is where the fun starts.
