How did your interest in fashion begin?
Fashion design is in my blood. Many of my relatives work in the industry. My father owned a shop when I was a child. That's where it started. I worked with him, learned from him and began experimenting in his shop. My creations -- what you see in the store and on runways -- have been my vision since I was 17 years old.
You see, I've always had a real passion for the female form, since I was a child. I love to enhance and decorate the natural beauty of women. And unlike the majority of fashion designers, I'm not gay. I'm perfectly straight. So I consider myself exceptionally lucky. I get to work with gorgeous women for a living. And it pays very well too!
But did you always see fashion as a lucrative career option?
I wasn't concerned with that so much, in the beginning. I just wanted to turn my dream into reality. I believe that God only blesses you with a dream if you are meant to achieve it. So that was my initial motivation, to play my part in God's greater plan.
But I'm also very thankful for my studies in management. They prepared me for entrepreneurship. I knew how to approach fashion from both artistic and business perspectives.
You see, my father is an amazing designer and tailor. But he never got the acclaim he deserved, because he wasn't marketed properly. I actually saw people wearing my father's outfits and trying to pass them off as something from a well-known designer. That always bothered the heck out of me. But it also served as a crash-course in the importance of branding, which is a lesson I've never forgotten.
