By row boat past a crocodile

The power supply had been cut at Topslip because of incessant rain. So we decided to go straight to Parambikulam, which was about 30 km away.

A cottage is located there on an isolated island called Veettikunnu inside the Parambikulam reservoir.

If we dared to cross the 150 feet deep reservoir by row boat, the 89 sq kms of the reservoir was all ours. We did. We were very vigilant for any wild animals. Though only wild animals we spied was a crocodile, a little away on the bank of the reservoir.

The island has no power supply and no commercial outlet to sell provisions. We had to carry a sodium vapour lamp and groceries with us. A forest constable who had a walkie-talkie could escort us to the mainland in case of an emergency.

A 5 feet wide trench was dug around the cottage to ward-off inquisitive elephants. Of course the narrow path for guests to cross over would easily allow a leopard, tiger or other small wild animal to cross over in case they wished to investigate the cottage.
