'I know it sounds cliched, but I was the tall, gawky girl with glasses and pigtails'

November 27, 2007
Where does the fashion industry stand in India when compared to the ones in Europe? How about the quality of the designers and their garments? Who is your favourite designer in India?

I don't know either industry in-depth, but from what I've gathered, it's quite political here. I think we have great talent in India, but the right people aren't necessarily always the ones who get marketed. But I can definitely say, from my own experiences, that it's becoming more professional.

As for my favourite designer, that's easy: it's Savio Jon.

I think he has such international sensibilities and he changes it up every season, which I find very refreshing.

A lot of people believe anorexia and bulimia are rampant in modelling. Do you agree with this notion? Is it any less or more of a problem in India?

I think it's not only rampant in modelling; it's rampant across the board. Having said that, I think it's more of a problem in the West. Unfortunately, it's becoming a serious concern here too.

But yeah, I've definitely seen models eat their rice crackers and instant noodles only because the packaging said zero calories!

Were you considered a 'beautiful' girl when you were younger? Have you always been confident with your looks?

Haha! Far from beautiful. I know this is such a cliche, but I was the tall, gawky girl -- which sometimes I still am -- with glasses and two pigtails. I wore my uniform way below my knees because I was so concious of my skinny, skinny legs.

But today I am definitely more secure with the way I look and with my body. Still, every day is a work in progress, because sometimes my gawkiness does come out to play!

Do you ever have 'bad' days when you don't want to even leave the house?

Bad days, of course! Yeah, everyone has them. Fashion models are real people, too! But I think for your day to be bad, it has to be about something more concrete than just your externalities.
