The Micro Manager
This type of boss does not trust the team's capabilities and tries to do things himself. This happens when the boss joins an established team or when he loses the confidence in the team. Signs to look out for:
He says what to do, how do to it, when to do it and sometimes even ends up doing it himself.
Doesn't delegate important work to anyone. If he does, he follows up on the status continuously.
You feel suffocated because there is no room left for you to think and innovate.
His favourite approach is 'my way or no way.'
How to deal?
To handle this boss, you need to have assertiveness skills and communicate effectively what you like and do not like.
Each time you get a new task or project, clearly define milestones and go to your boss with a plan and deadlines. Before he suggests something, explain how you are going to achieve this.
Proactively update the status of work you are doing. The more you communicate, the more you make your boss happy.
Your boss may sometimes behave like this because of pressure from his boss. If it is temporary, don't worry too much.
Sometimes, your boss might micro-manage only you and leave others on their own. This needs to be carefully examined. It can be because you are new, or because of a recent failure in your project. Talk to others around you. If they feel they were also micro-managed, the problem is not you.
