The Insecure Boss

This type of boss suffers an inferiority complex and feels threatened by successful people. Signs to look out for:

  • Tries to take the credit for all team activities.
  • Exposes the team to the outside world as a bunch of morons who can't do much without him.
  • Asks for ideas and does not accept any. Proposes his own ideas and compels everyone to follow them.
  • Keeps you away from important meetings like client visits, higher management meetings.
  • Counter argues any suggestion you propose at office meetings.
  • Often gives references to his past experience.

    How to deal?

There is no straight approach to handle this kind of boss. But some of the things you can do are:

  • Document meetings with your clients or team in the form of a document, which will work as proof in case your boss makes wrong claims regarding your achievements.
  • In advance, ask your boss if there are important meetings planned in the next one month. Inform him or her, via e-mail, about the meetings you are interested in.
  • Dedicate some time once or twice a month to meet your boss's boss and explain how you are making progress in your project. Even short hallway discussions will work.
  • If nothing works, start praising your boss openly. Try giving credit to your boss, even if he or she doesn't deserve it. This works only for a short term though. Then again, no boss in this world is permanent.
