Dear Santa, for Christmas I want...

December 21, 2007
It's that time of the year: pull out pens and paper and start writing a letter to Santa, making a list of all the good things you did (or at least the bad things you refrained from doing) and ask him for really nice things. And for the second, much longer list may we suggest...

A Hi-Fi stereo system
A bookshelf stereo system is a small, compact music player which -- as its name suggests -- can fit in a bookshelf. They are excellent substitutes for full fledged home theatre systems, which are usually far more expensive. They can, economically, be installed in a cozy corner of your bedroom so you can listen to your music in privacy without your family members constantly complaining or changing tracks.

Lucky Goldstar produces what are probably the most beautiful designs on the market for bookshelf stereo systems. The new FB162 from LG is the sleekest of all 'Micro Hi-Fi Systems'. The user interface is simple and minimal. The touch navigation pad is indistinguishable from the body and the functions are only marked out by red LED symbols.

The body itself is a gorgeous black -- 'its like the light just slides off' to quote Douglas Adams -- and very sleek. It has a DVD player (and can be connected to a TV) and also plays MP3 tracks, as almost all stereos do. However, it does not play tapes: so think twice if your favorite songs are on the old format.

The market price of the FB162 is around Rs 12K but you might be able to shave Rs 500 or so if you shop smart.
