Present scenario of healthcare in India

December 17, 2007
Payal expressed concern over the sad scenario of healthcare in India. Presently the health insurance exists in the form of Mediclaim policy offered to the individual or to any group, association or corporate bodies.

Although, total expenditure on health in India is nearly 6 per cent of the entire GDP, the government spending is less than 25 per cent against the average spending of 30-40 per cent in other developing countries.

My client fell closer to the average age in India which is 26 years wherein 65 per cent of our current population falls. Within over a decade's time whole of this population would enter a higher age bracket which is more prone to health hazards. Payal, chipped in stating that this was indeed a good sign for the healthcare industry, which was already raking up over Rs 3.5 trillion of revenues globally, as it would benefit from the increased spending towards the health treatment costs.

I was glad that my client was now out of the worrisome mood which would help us focus on a more rational and solution oriented conversation.
