The dress was definitely the showstopper at the Fashion Week in Mumbai, as were James Fereira's Maharashtra-inspired ensembles. The designer, who grew up in Mumbai, presented Warli art, the Sholapur chaddar, the navvari (nine yard) sari and other Maharashtrian elements in a stylish new avatar.
Model Nina Manuel (far left) sports a black and white dress with motifs from Warli, the decorative art form of tribal Maharashtra. Sucheta (centre) strikes a pose in a dress made from jackuard woven cotton; this dress is inspired by the Sholapur chaddar. The skirt and drawstring top worn by Tinu Verghese (far right) pay tribute to the Devnagiri script and the dhoti.
Style mantra: The 'urbane' look is in. Buy garments with an Indian element (fabric, textile and embroidery) but with a a slightly western silhouette.
