Fashion Week gets a dash of Southern spice
We caught up with 30-year old designer Chaitanya Rao from Chennai (originally from Mangalore), who has dressed superstars like Vikram, Surya, Madhavan, Asin (for the hit film Ghajini), Trisha, Jyothika and Simran from the Tamil and Telugu film industries.

"Film work is a different ballgame, and it can get stressful. I am currently working on one film starring Vikram, three films with Asin and a Telugu film with Nayantara. The tricky part is to balance that with putting up a collection here," says the designer, who sports a tattoo of a dragon breathing fire on the back of his clean-shaven head (ouch!)

"I have designed Vikram's costumes for the film Maja, where the look was rural. He's great to work with because he can carry off the clothes. He also walked the ramp for me at my Chennai show. I have also worked on Mani Ratnam's Aayitha Ezhuthu, the Tamil version of the Bollywood film, Yuva," he adds.

Chaitanya's inspiration for the show was the Hollywood film Silence Of The Lambs, starring Anthony Hopkins. Model Bhavna Sharma opened the show wearing a Hannibal Lector-inspired mask, carrying an artificial lamb as a prop.

The designer's new collection will retail for between Rs 2,000 and Rs 15,000 at his signature store -- No 3, Shyam's Garden, Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Chennai.
